Five People (五条人) - Peng Pai (彭啊湃)

from The Sound Stage Chinese Music Playlist by The Sound Stage 音你而乐

/

about

Another recommendation from Meng Ren. Peng Pai was the eldest son of a rich family in southern China's Guangdong province. His family's wealth came off the backs of farmers' hard work, but he chose to stand on the farmers' side and gave their land back to them. His thinking was advanced for the time, but no one supported him. This song is about a worker running into two military policemen. The worker says Pengpai's goodwill to give the land back to the farmers is stupid, as the farmers didn't care about him when he was in danger fighting for their rights. The two military policemen say Pengpai was arrested in Shanghai, and that the city dwellers also showed no concerned about his life or death at all. It's very creative with its use of musical phrasing and even seems like a theatrical play at times. They payoff comes near the end with a deeply cathartic chorus.
