Carsick Cars - Zhong Nan Hai (中南海)

from The Sound Stage Chinese Music Playlist by The Sound Stage 音你而乐

about

Although Carsick Cars is WAY overexposed (virtually all Western press about Chinese music talks about them) and maybe even a bit overrated, I still have to include them here. They nearly single-handedly exploded Chinese independent music into what it is today, back in the 2000s. This is an old track from their debut album, but I believe it to be absolutely indispensable. Zhong Nan Hai is the name of the compound where the President of China lives, and it's also a popular brand of cigarettes. "Can't live without Zhong Nan Hai..." they sing. It was and may still be customary to throw these cigarettes at them on stage whenever they perform this song. This picture is of the original line-up, because they will always be Carsick Cars to me. Here I go, writing too much about Carsick Cars...
